Are you playing a high impact sport? Preventable dental injuries in high impact sports, usually are avoidable! Thousands of Australians pay thousands of dollars and damage their smile because they didn’t have the right equipment. You need a custom mouth guard, let us explain in this blog everything you need to know about mouthguards!

What is a mouthguard / sports mouthguard?

It is a thick, spongy shield that protects your teeth. They are usually worn during activities that have risks of high impact of impact to the face. If you are not wearing one, you are risking damaging your smile and having expensive dental work.

Why wear custom sports mouthguards?

You need to protect your mouth – dental injuries are usually preventable, especially with the right equipment. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) and Warnervale Dental recommends custom-fitted mouth guard to provide maximum protection to your mouth. A mouthguard will help you:

  • Protect your teeth against impact
  • Protect your jaw joint and soft tissue against injury
  • Prevent jaw and neck injuries
  • Preventing and reducing concussions
  • Helps to promote proper breathing

According to the American Dental Association, your chance of injury goes up 60% when you’re not wearing a sports guard. With this – why would you not wear one? And why not get the best one you can?

Why Custom?

A custom mouthguard is superior to one you can buy at a store. It is designed to fit the exact dimensions of your mouth and is more resilient. It also allows you to balance your bite and talk and breath normally.

A custom sports mouthguard can also improve your performance on field! Opening your airways and allowing for better breathing lets you have a better performance!

At Warnervale Dental, we can also do custom colours – such as the Wyong Roo’s colours. We’re proud to sponsors of the Wyong Roos and contribute to our local community involvement.

How to Care for Your Custom Sports Mouthguard

It’s game day – all you need to do is:

  1. Rinse it or brush it with toothpaste and a toothbrush
  2. Air dry

On occasion, you should clean your mouthguard with soapy and cool water. Make sure you rinse thoroughly – you don’t want the taste of soap in your mouth!

If you aren’t using it – keep it in a cool place and store in a plastic container with vents that allow it to air.
AND MAKE SURE TO TAKE IT HOME AND OUT OF THE CAR! The heat can warp the mouth guard and make it unusable! Once it starts to show wear and tear, it’s time to replace it!

Most importantly, remember to bring it home after the game. If it’s left in the car, for example, the heat can destroy the shape, rendering it useless. Keep an eye out for any wear or tear as this will indicate the need for replacement.
